Splash, Dash, Dot - Having Fun Mixing Colors and Patterns

Yesterday I celebrated being a Mommy to my two beautiful boys. As circumstances would have it, my day looked perhaps a bit more familiar than I would have dreamed up for myself.  I was the first one awake at 6:15.  Not gonna lie... WTH??

Coffee brewed by 6:40.

Baby from crib at 6:55.

Poopy diaper no more by 7:30.

Three loads of laundry folded by 7:45.

Pancake breakfast ready at 8:30.

I did manage to get in my long run before church at 11:15. Big Smile. Who knew every restaurant in town would be booked until 3pm on Mother's Day?!

HA!

So, we ventured over to Earth Fare for lunch from the buffet. It was delish and turned out to be the perfect spot for a few snap shots. It was a pretty typical day, and in retrospect it just wouldn't have seemed right to have it any other way. Oh, and I did manage to get in an afternoon nap.  Suuuu-perb.

Southern Wedding Shower

Dear Friends,

I am very excited to be hosting a virtual wedding shower today for my beautiful, super stylish, sweet friend, Ivana.

When Ivana and I decided to host a blog swap with one other, we immediately got to thinking about what this would look like. Ivana reminded me of her wedding date, exactly one year from today!

I've been keeping an eye on Ivana's fun fashion sense, from all the way over in Austria might I add, ever since I started writing the Queen City Style. A contentious risk taker with her own style, trends and fashion, Ivana's got a flair for all things fun, fabulous and French. She has fond memories of a strong bond with her stylish Grandmother, reminding me of my relationship with my own.

Not to mention, that pretty face. Precious Peanut #1 star gazingly pointed out the obvious one day: "Mommy, is that pretty lady your friend?"

Ivana loves the finer things in life as much as the rest of us. Her blog, Macarons and Pearls, is the perfect channel for vicariously living such a fine life, unless of course, you already do.

And in that case, cheers to you! As you can see, like the rest of us girls, Ivana loves an opportunity to be creative and play dress up, so today I am giving her that by way of throwing her a Southern Wedding Shower. I thought this would be a fun way to share with her a little about our culture and traditionally conservative and classy way of doing things, for which we Southerners are all so proud. So cheers to you, Ivana!  I hope you enjoy your special day today!

Let's start with the location.

Since Ivana's shower is being held right here in the Queen City, I immediately turned to the The Duke Mansion. I've attended a number of events at this gorgeous home, now operating as a Southern Bed and Breakfast, and I've never been less than enamored with the home and ground's interior and exterior beauty. I know Ivana and the closest ladies in her life will enjoy their stay here. I thought it might be nice for Ivana's guests to enter the Mansion,

and as they pass through the foyer...

...delight themselves with either one of these tasty treats. A peach green iced tea with mint,

or if you are feeling extra festive in celebration of Ivana's upcoming nuptials, perhaps treat yourself to something a little more bold; a Mint Julep garnished with fresh mint, served from a Julep cup.

The gardens at The Duke Mansion are a lovely place for conversation and good tidings.

It's starting to get warm in the South, so we'll make sure the gardens are flanked with lots of Sago Palms and Ferns to help us feel a little more breezy in the heat.

What shall we serve?  Nothing to heavy.  We will dine on a light lunch. How about a few passed hors d' oeuvres, consisting of finger sandwiches? Cucumber Tea Sandwiches, of course.

Naturally, Deviled Eggs.

Without question, little ham biscuits.

Making our way back inside, we'll take our seats at tables draped with white tables cloths and delicate doilies placed at each setting.

I'd find a way to work them into this table, which cheerfully displays all of the traditional elements of a Southern table, with a modern twist thanks to the chevron napkins an colored candlesticks.

The table will, of course, be accessorized with pink peonies and white hydrangea galore.

We'll serve a delicate lunch consisting of avocado and grapefruit salad, supplemented with fresh lump crab meat.  No filler.

Passed garlic cheese biscuits.  Hhhmmm Hmmm.

If you've saved room for desert, I was thinking Bananas Foster prepared table side.

At least that is what I was planning on, until saw this. Bananas Foster Belgium Waffles.

Ivana, I know about you and your little sweet tooth.  Eat your heart out!

But I must warn you, this might be you...

We must shower you will gifts, my dear. I can think of nothing more southern or luxurious than monogrammed linens from Leontine Linens.

You'll need this as you exchange vows with your lucky lad, Philippe.

As parting gifts, I hope your guests will enjoy Quartz Votive Holders and Worcester Jar matches, both by Design Darling. Store owner and Blogger, Mackenzie, offers just the cutest things!

Since Ivana has a thing for pastels, I thought I would wear this ensemble I recently styled.  Ironically enough, the photos were taken just doors down from The Duke Mansion. How do I look, Ivana? The floppy brimmed straw hat, a warm weather staple for any Southern Lady, is good for keeping cool on sunny days.

You certainly don't need me to tell you this, Ivana, but...

You already are, my dear, and I'm having so much fun watching your stylish self do it.

I hope you have had a lovely day! I look forward to following along with more preparations leading up to your big day!!

Night on the Queen City

Most wonderful man in the world and I recently had a little double date action with two of our closest friends, Queen City Style. Pre-dinner drinks at Sullivan's. Stroll on over to the East/West Blvd. to catch the train. Hop on the Light Rail uptown bound for some fabulous convo and eats. We accidentally took the train two stops too far,  but it was my favorite part of the night. Anything that makes me feel like I am in the big city. NYC. There's no other feeling like it. But the Queen City... she holds her own quite well.

Can I get a RIGHT ON!?

Last night I ventured uptown with most wonderful man in the world, my mom, step father, friends and cousins to the Wells Fargo Plaza for the season opener of Alive After Five. Our wedding band, Right On, the best party band IN THE WORLD, was playing. The fun seemed to start and finish in the blink of an eye. Right On band promises to take a break only if you ask them to.

How fun is that? If you live in the Queen City and you missed it, they are playing again this coming Friday at Piedmont Town Center.

The ever fabulous Nigel Holland.

A shot of me and Nigel from my and most wonderful man in the world's wedding night five and a half years ago. My poor dress. The lace on the hem was/is in shreds. I had my mother's wedding dress remade, so the way I see it, we have gotten a fair return on investment.

Oh what a night.

For last night's ensemble, I paired a handful of birthday items to style the complete look.

I just met this dapper gentleman. I was totally loving his ensemble and thought ours combined would make for a good photo opp. Those shades, the sunnies and kicks, and the pop of red on his wrist...

Pastel Eclectic

I'm participating in the EVERYBODY everywhere pastels challenge today. Given my love of bright bold color, I wasn't sure I would have the necessary garb in my closet to put something together. I did a little mixing and matching, playing around with different pieces, and I came up with this. As it turns out, I'm loving it and am wondering why I've never worn this ensemble before now. Thank you, EVERYBODY everywear, for the inspiration.

Most wonderful man in the world planned a magical mystery birthday night out for me with a few of my closest girlfriends. Lilly Love

Happy Weekend, Stylish Friends!

This post contains A LOT of information relevant to Lilly Pulitzer... store info, personal favs, resources, images of old and new...and more... so if you are a Lilly Lover, sit back and pour over the details!

If not, as usual, I THANK YOU just as well for visiting!

Last night I had the fun pleasure of attending a special evening at the new Lilly Pulitzer store at South Park Mall.  It was a chance for a few close friends and family members to get their hands on some of the most incredibly adorable merchandise I have ever seen, and in my case, a chance for me to tell you about all of their cuteness, hot off the press!  Where to start??

Lilly Pulitzer Store Front at South Park Mall

As a lover of all things colorful, this Lilly Pulitzer store is like, for me.... going back to some of your fondest childhood memories...As a little girl I see....walking on a pebble path leading to the ocean, bare feet, dressed in a cotton yellow and white sundress (vintage Lilly print of course) trimmed with rick rack lace, the wisps of fragile strands of young blond hair delicately blowing in the wind, fresh air all around, with an ice cream cone in hand, the vanilla cream slowly melts down the side of the cone and onto my fingers as I take the first step onto sand, and I can see the sparkly crystals on the calm, clear blue sea just in front of me.  My eyes are closed as I see this moment I share with you, much like my first time coming to know Lilly Pulitzer.

Vintage Lilly via

The below is a picture of my Grandmother, with my Grandfather, wearing the garment that served as my first introduction to Lilly!  (Aren't they adorable?)

I am so fortunate she has joined all the other lovely vintage ladies in my wardrobe. I love wearing her during the warm summer months.

The vision of that little girl at the beach, all grown up.  Smile.

My night at the Lilly Pulitzer store opening was full of highlights.  I met and conversed with lots of great gals. I shared with one of the ladies from Lilly my story about this skirt, my love of Lilly, and my love for vintage clothing.  We talked about many of the dress maker details maintained by the Lilly Pulitzer line over the years.  Look at the attention to detail with "Lilly" embroidered on the lace seem.  All of the cotton garments produced still include this special seem.  Have you ever noticed?

Look who it is... Courtenay Wardell and Jen Plym of the Queen City's very own Charlotte Smarty Pants!  As a new blogger on the block, it sure was neat meeting some of the Queen City's most successful in their craft.  Look at them all decked out in their Lilly!

So fun running into a newer friend of mine, Ashley, who writes the most adorable blog, so appropriately titled, Sweet Southern Prep.  Look at us all Sweet, Southern and Preppy in our Lilly.

I just had to include this next picture.  I purchased the dress at the Madison Avenue store in NYC while I was pregnant with my second son.  I've had every good intention of having it altered.

I just can't seem to find the time! Whoa.

Other than sharing all this fabulousness with you fabulous ladies and gents, my self-prescribed mission for the evening was to somehow narrow down my favorite items in the store to My Top Three Picks.

And so, in no particular order...

(click on title to shop)

Kiera Dress

I chose this item for the versatility.  The store has an entire corner dedicated to all white items. Absolutely sweet and lovely.  Wedding whites.  Tennis anyone?

Does it get more preppy proper than this?  Great for a Garden Party, Girls Luncheon, Brunch, Pool Party.  The options are endless.  The dress also comes strapless, called the Blossom Dress.

Adorable.  I chose the Kiera Dress, since it is V-neck and covers the shoulders, which when following proper church etiquette, this means you could wear it without a shawl. Just don't wear it to your ex-boyfriend's wedding... not that you would. Though if he saw you in either, he would regret ever letting you get away.

Alima Top

Also quite versatile, don't you just love all of the fantastic trade mark Lilly colors in this top? Like wearing a Monet watercolor on your body. So flowy and chic.

Camila Coat

As the website states, a timeless piece with a touch of metallic.  It is so chic to me.  So Jackie O. With the soft neutral colors, this coat with go with anything.

Really, everything is amazing... SO, I shan't leave out my Top Three In-House Accessories...

Spring Garden Necklace

Oh my.  Could this BEE any cuter??

Resort Chic Wedges

In a bevy of styles, how can you choose just one?!

Trellis Tote

You just gotta have the proper coordinating bag! I love the versatility (yet again) of this bag.  It is large enough to carry all your essentials but delicate enough to carry with a dress.  Don't you think?

I leave you with additional images to wet your palette. From the clothing, to the furniture, accessories and gift items, Beauty Abounds at Lilly Pulitzer South Park!

One final fun fact... did you know there is a Facebook page dedicated to recycling all things Lilly?!

It is the Re-Lilly Facebook page...

The Gathering Place for Lilly Lovers to Buy, Sell and Swap their Lilly and meet other Lilly Lovers.

Re-Lilly + Lover of all things Lilly and all things Vintage = Is anyone interested in splitting the winning lottery ticket with me?

For the love of classic colorful style, Bon Weekend!  xo-Whitley

It's Tuesday, I'm in Love!

One of my new favorite websites for a little friendly fashion competition is EVERYBODY, everywear, where the fashion-obsessed are invited to put their best food forward in sharing their personal style, as well as gain inspiration from other bloggers.  I first participated in the fun when I styled this vintage white dress which belonged to my Grandmother.  On Valentine's Day, this month's EVERYBODY, everwear challenge called for color.  Pink + Red to be specific.  I have a bit of an obsession with color.

And today...well, I'm tickled pink.

My Inspiration for the look on this day of love - the out of this world sexy and lovely Brigitte Bardot.

via

With some killer style instincts from one of J. Crew at South Park Mall's very own personal stylists, basics for the ensemble were cultivated.

As we perused the store for all things red and pink, I saw this swim suit. Call it love at first sight.  I snagged it immediately with the thought of styling it like a bustier.

Heart throb smocked tank

J. Crew carries these adorable jeans in a rainbow of colors...

Toothpick Jean

We found this cardigan pretty in pink...

Jackie cardigan

...then fabulous pumps and a belt to pull all articles of clothing together.

Italian leather skinny belt

What could be more romantic than Poems of Love by one of literature's greatest influences, William Shakespeare?

Would you believe that I am actually performing a stomach crunch here?

I do love to multi-task.

The necklace, my own, was purchased of all places from the gift shop at my church! I have also seen the necklace, both in red and turquoise, at the Queen City's own savvy consignment boutique, J.T. Posh.

All wrist bangles are my own, with the exception of this floral lovely from J. Crew.

How's my Bardot?

Do you have any special plans for Valentine's Day this year?  I think I'll take a jog in the free Love Connection Run sponsored by the Queen City's own Run For Your Life in Dilworth. Refreshing for the mind, body and soul.  I wish you and your loved ones a very colorful and most lovely Valentine's Day!

Stylin' Sunday - Slithery, Sequiny, Glittery Tops

I hope you all are having a wonderful weekend!  As a follow up to this week's Fashion Friday, I share with you a plethora of fabulous Flashy, Slithery, Glittery, Sequiny Tops.  Below is my Grandmother's, which I drooled over as a child, and I still can't get enough of today.

I hit South Park area boutiques and South Park Mall in search of the most fabulous sequin tops out there. Given my timing was just before Christmas, shoppers were already scampering like sardines about the mall in no organized fashion, ravenously hunting for their New Year's Eve ensemble.  Unfortunately, this meant not much Glitterati-worthy inventory remaining.  I did manage to find this one fabulous bit of fancy at my favorite stand by, Belk.

I mean, do y'all SEE how hard I'm working?  (Make shift) Model, photographer, personal shopper... Whew!  I recall thinking right about that time, "I NEEED a grilled cheese sandwich!"  Arthur's...Snap, Snap. Please!

It was the last one there, and I'm guessing it's gone by now, but here is the tag with merchandise info. and price...$245.  Not inexpensive.  The weight of the shirt was very nice.  It felt like a quality garment.

But, I did find it, ON SALE no less, at a much lower price.

Fashion Friday - Vintage 80's Metallic Sequin Top

I recently decided to wear my absolute most favorite piece of clothing as a child that belonged to my Grandmother; this fabulous vintage metallic sequin top...

Could you not just DIE?  A little dramatic, I realize, but that's how I feel about this top.  I am calling it an 80's vintage top, because it was in the 80's that I would go to visit my Grandmother and drool over it, and it looks very 80's, no?

Seriously, I cannot tell you how many times I put this shirt on and sashayed myself across my grandparent's house like I owned the place.  I put my best super model strut on display down the hall like it was my catwalk.  I couldn't get enough of it, and I wore it with an exuberance that matched only that of Elizabeth Taylor dripping in emeralds, diamonds and rubies from all seven husbands; eight if you count both marriages to Richard Burton.

Really, I have probably put this top on at least twice a year, ever year since I was five years old.  At times I've done so with absolutely no intentions of going anywhere, just playing dress up...until one night before Christmas I finally wore it out for the very first time.

For some reason, while I have what I consider to be somewhat of a dynamic and liberal taste for fashion, I've always been on the conservative side in my follow through.  I'm immediately drawn to articles of clothing that are outstandingly unique or irresistibly eye-catching, yet I can't always seem to wear them out the door.  There are so many times I've thought I would wear a certain something... if only I lived in New York City.  And then when I visit the city, it seems any inhibitions magically fly out the door while confidence gently rolls in with an effervescent glow.

WHAT is it??  Well, no more.  There is no point in having fabulous fashions if you don't wear them.  So, look out Queen City, there's a new pep in town!  I think as a child I would have expected to wear the top with a black skirt or black pants, but when it came to styling it to current fashion, I reached for a pair of black and olive mini houndstooth check shorts by Gap, diamond patterned tights and my circa 2002 J.Crew tall black stiletto boots.

For the jewels, I went with my favorite vintage bracelet, you've seen before, that belonged to my Great-Grandmother.  The ring is a special piece to me.  In the center is a black pearl my husband and I picked out while on our honeymoon in Tahiti.  He had it constructed for me in its current setting as a birthday gift/present when my second son was born.

The Mod Glam earrings are by JewelMint.  These are SO fun, and they are clip-on's.  Who knew?!

Click HERE to view Mod Glam earrings at the JewelMint shop on Facebook.

Finally, for a layer of warmth I opted for a pop of color on the way out the door instead of sticking with safe basic black.  This coat is not vintage, but I think the styling of it is very much so. I purchased it at Banana Republic probably eight years ago.  I saw it and fell head over heels for the bright green color, classic cut and styling.

I was a little nervous stepping out of the house with so much pizazz in my ensemble, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it... wink. I mean, if I'm going to have a STYLE blog, I should dress the part, right?  How stylish do you think the Queen City is?  We may not be THE city... New York City, but we've totally got style.

I would love to see your most stylish ensemble, or just one that you love.  Please email thequeencitystyle@yahoo.com, and yours might appear front and center for an upcoming Fashion Friday.

For the love of sizzlin' 80's high style, xx-Whitley

Stylin' Sunday - Black and White

Hi everyone!  I hope you enjoyed my mad rush black and white ensemble earlier this week.  This fast job was a lot of fun!  So, here's how it all came together...

I spanned my closet for black and white elements. I saw a few of the other interpretations HERE and the first thing in my head was "it has to be unique".  This means no black pants, no white shirts.  Not that I don't love classic, timeless staples, this just has to be different.  This had me springing for the front hall closet to inspect my wardrobe overflow, mostly summer pieces but also some non-everyday dress-up garments.  I found a white skirt suit I wore to my first son's Baptism... pretty, but not "the one".  Then, I spotted this dress which belonged to my Grandmother...

Front

Back

I've always loved this dress.  I wore it has as my "bridal trousseau" the evening of our wedding.

Since this dress is vintage, I'm thinking I won't be able to find an exact replica for you, but here are some unique flowy fabulous options that I do love.  Click on the link below the image to shop the look.

I love how flowy and soft these next two are...

Styling of the dress came to me immediately.  Black opaque tights, black pumps, black trench, Channey love, vintage bracelet belonging to my Great-Grandmother.

Here are the pieces coming together...

Black Trench from Banana Republic.  The construction of this coat is PERFECT.  Several years ago my mother and I were shopping over at South Park and spotted this.  She generously gifted it to me for Christmas later that year, and it has become my all around classic, go-with-anything dress coat.

Black Cole Haan Pumps from Recycle Boutique over at my home away from home, Park Road Shopping Center.

Truth be told, these shoes are a half size too big, but I could not say no.  They are the kind with the Nike Air stuff in them, which means uber comfy and that much more stylish at a nice price.  If you haven't been to Recycle Boutique, they have fabulous finds for not only your wardrobe but also for your home.

My Channey Love.  Read about her HERE...

Favorite Vintage Bracelet that I wear all the time...

Then, searching.....hmmm... for something different.  Something chic.  A look I have been wanting to style for a long time.  So long I haven't sported it since riding passenger in my Dad's former beloved 1979 Silver Volkswagon Bug Convertible, "The Volks".

Oh, those were the days.  Riding top down passenger, or perhaps in the far back, perched on top of the roof folded down. And always styling a red handkerchief around my head.  Dad kept a blue and red one in the side pocket of the door, so his passenger's hair would only faintly, ever so stylishly, be blowing in the wind. Here is my modern day attempt.  Regardless of the outcome, unmistakably, I felt totally chic.

As you can see, I reached for my classic Burberry scarf, certainly a favorite.  Next, for an instant pop of color, I grabbed this bright red sash which belonged to my Grandmother, which I wear quite often.  It's sort of a signature staple for me... something to amp up the look of a garment that would otherwise be, simply off the rack.

I like to cinch it around my waist as a sash...

Where else than Summerall Chapel at The Citadel for a lovely spring wedding?

I have wrapped it around my hair like a wide head band/scarf, and often times I just tie it on something for the extra pop of color.

Scarves are so multi-functional and fun.

Lastly, for the jewelry, I knew I wanted more prominent earrings.  I love the look of large hoops, which Jennifer Lopez so stylishly often times sports with her head scarves.

My large gold hoops are very thin, and since the dress is so simple and without a pattern, I wanted something that would be a little more eye-catching.  I love these black and gold statement-makers from the Queen City's own super savvy consignment boutique, J.T. Posh.  While more prominently known for their fabulous consigned couture, did you know J.T. Posh also carries a wide selection of knew VERY affordable jewels and accessories?  I think I scored these dazzling darlings for $18.

Since I'm all dressed up really with nowhere to go, I might as well make myself a cocktail and enjoy the moment.

For the love of wardrobe styling in classic black and white, xx-Whitley

Black and White: A Challenge for Me!

Hellllllo Readers!  Wow, two posts in one day.  Seriously??  This is not what I intended, and I really hope I haven't catapulted you all straight into the arms of Snoresville!  I have been working on my inspiration board to get all of my many goals organized, so I can slow myself down and take ONE. STEP. AT. A. TIME. Wreeeeeeeeeeek!  Bam!  Derailed....

A very stylish friend of mine, Lori, sent me a nice email this evening around 9pm telling me about a site titled EVERY BODY every wear, where readers may submit their stylistic interpretations for the given theme. The opportunity to play along with this fun game is once a month, and today happened to be that day... Theme: Black and White.

So what totally insane thing do I do?  You got it.  In jammies, bedroom shoes and all, I ran straight up the stairs and down the hall for my closet, pouring over the items in my head, because what if this opportunity is over by 9:30pm??  I've got to hurry!  I literally pull this outfit in 2 minutes and take 10 minutes to put it all together.  It took me 7 of those minutes to tie the scarf on my head!  It is really hard to tie a slippery silk scarf when you are moving so fast, and you can't seem slow down enough to even roll the scarf through your fingers.... There's a saying... "The Hurrieder I Go, The Behinder I Get".  That is me.

Anyway, I got it on, and I'm ready!  Racing back to the top of the stairs I yell down to most wonderful man in the world... "Jon, grab the camera. Please hurry!"  Kinda like a real emergency only not.  Anyway.  So here you have it. For now, I gotta go to bed.... hopefully I'll be able to sleep.  I'm a little wired.  Black + White...

Well what do you think?  How did I do??  I am thinking this will serve as Fashion Friday, on a late Tuesday night, and I'll bring you the deets on Sunday.

For the love of classic basic black and white gone stylish... Have a wonderful week!  Whitley

Stylin' Sunday - Jumpsuit, Romper, Playsuit... Funsuit!

Hello lovely friends!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!  I don't know where it went, but it sure went fast.  We tackled our basement (for the 400th time), trying to get the space organized so that I may have a more soothing, clutter-free work space to bring y'all the most stylin' of the stylish!  I made two inspiration boards to help me with getting all my thoughts, projects, ideas and excitement in some sort of order. I'll share them with you in a future post, but in the meantime I just gotta show you all these totally hot Funsuits that I found for you.  As I say in the aforementioned post title... Jumpsuit, Romper, Playsuit... whatever you want to call them, they are all SO fun, so I'm calling it a Funsuit!

Perhaps my all time fav is this Gucci Jumpsuit worn by Olivia Wilde in the below picture.  It's hard for me to articulate in a short 'n sweet fashion why I love it so, so I'll just be so bold as to say it might be my most favorite.

Nicole Richie always speaks to my Boho side, and she flawlessly nails looking hot in this little romper.  Almost always I would vote against heels with a short jumper, because you have to be careful to not look like you are dressing younger than your age.  A great pair of gams, however, will often afford you on their own, this fun and flattering opportunity.  For Nicole Richie's Funsuit, perhaps it is the sleeves.  She's definitely got the gams.  Whatever it is, I vote she looks totally sophisticated and chic in this shorty.

Next is Gwen Stefani with her hubby, Gavin Rossdale, wearing a black sequin jumpsuit by Stella McCartney. She looks chic, powerful, adorable, cute.... cute, cute, cute!

And here's our very own Prince in his very own Gold Sequin Jumpsuit.  All I can say is rock on which ya bad self, Prince!

Now onto the fun part... Funsuits for your very own closet!  Once again, our on-line retailer friends at ASOS were tearing it up with some fabulous options.  I tried to diversify my referrals, but ASOS reigned King of the Funsuit.  Click on the links below the images to shop the look.  I can't wait to hear which ones end up in your shopping cart!

Here's mine again by French Connection, which by the way is now on sale at 50% off on their website...

Fashion Friday - Celebrating a New Year, Sequin Style

Happy 2012, Y'all!  I hope your year is off to a great start thus far!

Most wonderful man in the world and I had (in my very best Shag voice) the MOST fun evening bidding adieu to 2011 and welcoming 2012.  The Monday prior to the big Hoorah, I had lunch with my sweet, and in this case sneakily influential friend, Heather, at one of my most favorite spots in all of Charlotte, Arthur's in Belk at South Park Mall.  Really, I was only there for good food and good conversation, but as it so happens, THE outfit was upstairs waiting there for me.  I stumbled upon this French Connection little ditty and intentionally did not take myself and the ditty into the dressing room.  Then... Heather MADE me do it.  For fear of what would happen, it happened.  I put it on, and I loved it.  I swear.  She made me do it.

Truth be told, I will be so bold as to say that in all of Charlotte, among ALL of the fabulous shopping, Belk may just be my very favorite.  I actually got all but one of my wedding outfits and dresses at Belk!  They have such a fun and wide assortment of goodies for all, and who doesn't love what seems to be the eternal 20% Early Bird Special every day of the week and every hour of the day they offer?

Anyway, the outfit... I just went on-line to find this jumper for you, and here's how their model wore it.  Not bad...

And, here's how I rocked mine.  Gotta admit, I'm kinda privy...

I picked up this precious little ditty at a fabulous 30% off then whipped out a surprise Belk gift card I forgot I had, and Voila!  I paid maybe half the sticker price.  True Luh-uhv.

Now how to style and accessorize??  Because we were going to a dinner party, I wanted to veer on the side of less formal, playful, fun. This meant boots over heels.  At the brilliant recommendation of my friend, Katherine, I went with my favorite Stu's.  I can't tell you how fabulous these boots are.  They will make any and everybody's leg feel and look great.

Nordstrom typically has them on sale each season, which is where I snagged mine.

Stuart Weitzman Jefe Cola Suede Stiletto knee-high boot. Of course I had to carry along my favorite new winter love...

For the jewels, well I just piled on the bling.  Do y'all remember that absolutely, insanely gorgeous J.Crew necklace I wore in my very first post, about recreating my Grandmother's look in the Lucky magazine article?...

Well, could my mother have been any cooler than to know how Ga-Ga I was over it, and then get me my very own pretty baby for Christmas?!  Sorry y'all, gotta jam out with my one and only karaoke number... Name that artist... I'm SO Excited!! (duh duh) And I just can't hide it! (noooo)  I'm about ta lose control an I think I like it, OOOH YEAH!

Hello, inheritance piece.  All's I gotta say is boys better marry some stylish and NICE girls.

On to the wrists and phalanges... I just piled 'em on.  I'm loving the mixed metals stacked on high.  Two of the rings and one of the bracelets are my every day staples.  I've never owned one of these wrap beaded bracelets, but my dear life long friend, Ashley, sent this one for Christmas, and I am loving it!  I think I've shared this bit of turquoise-to-die-for once before, but if not, it is a piece that belonged to a dear friend of mine who passed away earlier this year.  Her daughter could not have bestowed upon me a more touching gesture than to gift it to me as a way to remember my special friend.  I love having a little bit of Willie adorning me on my most fashionable of nights out on the Queen City.

Lastly, the ear bobs are a pair of crystal clip-on's that belonged to my Grandmother.  I think they pull it all together so gracefully.

Here's ALL the jewels!  Gosh, boys really miss out on SO much fun!

Earlier in the day, Katherine gave me this wonderfully sleek and unique Liora Manne pouch for Christmas. Check out the new Liora Manne Home retail store at 1336 Central Ave.

If you didn't already decipher from the pics, most wonderful man in the world and I ventured over to neighborhood fav, Nolen Kitchen, for a quick shared glass of vino, just the two of us.  Can I just tell you what a romantic outdoor patio they have?  I'm sure we've all been there, but on this night we were the only ones on the patio.  That fireplace and those stringing lights, with the traffic passing by on Selwyn Ave. off in the distance... Such a beautiful evening put me in that magical place again, and I was strolling the sidewalks of New York City.

I highly recommend a sequin playsuit, lots of glamorous accessories and a little Nolen Kitchen patio in your life soon. I'd like to thank most wonderful man in the world for working the camera like it was his job.  It was such a fun night out celebrating the New Year.

For the love of all out fabulous style, happiness and fun-filled nights in 2012,  xx-Whitley

Fashion Friday - ASOS Trousers and a Fabulous Vintage Mink Fur Coat

Happy Friday, Everyone!  I'm so excited for the very first Fashion Friday which was inspired by these insanely Uh-Maze-Ing trousers I recently purchased on ASOS.  I was delighted and equally excited by the number of emails, texts and calls I received from many of you about these pants.... SO FUN!!

I was milling around on line one day, and with no intention what so ever, I found myself back on the ASOS website.  It is one of my favorite overseas hubs for fabulous garb.  Don't ask me how or why, but all I know is the blogging is VERY dangerous for me.  I mean, it has me looking at images of beautiful clothes, decor, furniture, jewels, and every other type of stylish thing to have me drooling in nothing but desire.  But really, I love the inspiration these images give me, and I am so excited to share that with you.

Back to the trousers... I saw them and could not say no.

I was so excited upon their arrival that I photographed the welcoming party...

I just want to swathe my entire self in this fabric.  How divine?

I think they fit right in at their new home.  Don't you?  They were welcomed with open arms by all their new friends.

So, what are you waiting for ladies?  Click here to see if they are still available in your size.  (As a side note, sizes are also European, but there is a conversion chart.  I found my pair to be true to my exact size).  Are you seated for the best part?... Because ASOS is an online retailer based in the UK, prices listed are in Euros. Well, these trousers are on sale for 18.00 Euros, which right now means $23.32!  If the pants are no longer available your size, do not dismay, there are plenty of other fabulous designs on ASOS over which you may drool.

As you can see, I had probably the most fun ever playing dress up in these trousers.  I wore them to a friend's holiday party, and what better occasion for a little sparkle and shine?

For the accessories, I paired my ensemble with this bright green resin wrist bangle that belonged to my Great-Grandmother.  I call it my Wonder Woman bracelet.  It is so strong and sturdy, and of course, it possesses super powers.

The Mod Glam earrings are by JewelMint.  These are SO fun, and they are clip-on's!... #1-Who knew clip on earrings were still made?  And #2-Who knew they looked this good?  I'll be bringing you the 411 on JewelMint in a post to come.  Quite honestly, I am a little silly over this on-line jewelry club.

I recently took a photo inventory of every piece of clothing and accessory I own that belonged to my Grandmother or Great-Grandmother, which serves as my inspiration for Fashion Friday.  The newest piece in that inventory is a mink fur coat that did not belong to my Grandmother but my Grandfather's mother.  The coat was passed down to my Aunt, and upon the recent sell and downsize of her home, she needed to shed some of her possessions.  I was beyond flattered, delighted and excited when my mom called to tell me my Aunt asked if I wanted it.  It is too large for me as is, but I have zero problem with that!

Her monogram, Elizabeth White Whitley...

And so, this night was the first I have ever worn a fur of such sorts, and I thought about it for about...oh, two seconds... then knew I had to wear it!  With sheer joy, excitement, and serious warmth I might add, I did.

I love the oversize collar and bell sleeves.

Oh my, I love everything about it.  I'll admit I wasn't 100% comfortable wearing it.  Just not quite the same as my good ole stand-by Gap demin jacket, you know?  However, I do think with a little practice I could get used to the feeling prrrreetty quickly.  It makes me feel very old Hollywood wearing it.  I can close my eyes, or not, and in my mind be taken to some fabulous time and place in the past.  I'm seeing a brisk wintry night strolling down Madison Avenue, peering in the boutique store fronts with little twinkly stars all around up in the sky.  Can you see it?  Oooohhhh, I can.  Are we there yet?

For the love of Old Hollywood glitz, glamour and fabulous feel good fashion, I wish you a most stylish New Years Eve Weekend!  Be safe, and wish upon your star, xo-Whitley
