Giving Back

With the exception of perhaps my inaugural post, I am most proud of the one I am sharing with you today. Through their community support campaign, I recently joined forces with the Dowd YMCA, in a most fun and stylish way might I add, to send a few children to camp this summer.

How so, you say?  Meet the lovely, sweet and dear Ms. Raquel. (Yep, that's Precious Pea number two there she's holding).

The Dowd YMCA set a goal to raise $30,000 in order to send 30 children to camp for 10 weeks.  Each child watch staff member was challenged to raise $1,000, and in doing so, they were encouraged to involve families of the child watch program. Ms. Raquel asked my family to help, and with the help of other friends and families, we collected $200 in order to send two children to camp! SOOO AWESOME!!

Thank you, again, to our wonderful friends who participated!

BUT WAIT!

The fun doesn't stop here. In reaching their goals, each child watch staff member had to pay up. In Mrs. Raquel's case, payment came in the form of a dress. You see, Raquel has not worn a dress since the 5th grade! One day towards the end of the fundraising period, I was informed of just how close Raquel was to reaching her goal. So, I offered Raquel a deal; one she was reluctant to accept...If I donate the remainder of your balance, I get to style your fabulous self on the Queen City Style, WEARING A DRESS, for all the world to see! After several moment's thought, Raquel excitedly agreed. She knew what this would mean for the children of the community. And so, I PROUDLY bring to you... wearing a dress...

The lovely, sweet and dear Ms. Raquel!

TA-DA!!!!!!!!!

I mean, how ADORABLE and FABULOUS is she?! And all those children going to camp this summer? Could there BE anything be more fun and stylish?! Why, yes.  There could be, and there is, but you'll have to come back tomorrow to see! I am so proud, happy and excited to share this with you, so please promise me you will! :)

For the love of Giving Back, in the very best of style...

See you tomorrow!  Whitley

Cinco de Mayo

Most wonderful man in the world, precious pea number one and precious pea number two and I ventured out this afternoon for a little family style Cinco de Mayo fun. Cold cerveza for my man, chips and queso for the boys, tasty on the rocks with salt margarita for me. I love the perfect opportunity to pull from my wardrobe this hand embroidered Mexican blouse I found from a small shop on the Upper East Side of Manhattan almost 15 years ago. Actually, I think mine is a mini-dress, but I usually wear it as a shirt. It was a beautiful day in the Queen City.

Embroidered Blouse: Here is a selection or Here. Oh, and I've also been eying this one. Shorts: Loft (old), these look like mine at a great price. Shoes: Michael Kors (mine are last season), here's a similar pair. Sunglasses:  Mine are Blinde Natural Born Thrillers from Doctor's Vision Center in the Queen City, Here's a similar pair at a nice price. Head Scarf: My Grandmother's. Earrings: Gifted from a friend.  I like these. Bangles: Green belonged to my Grandmother. Pink and Red gifted from the best splurge on consignment, summerbird. Others: Stella & Dot Here and Here, J. Crew Crystal Rope Bracelet in select stores only. Rings: Custom and Tiffany Interlocking Circles Ring.

Channeling a Jumpsuit Favorite

For over a year now, I've held on tight to this image ripped from InStyle magazine, aka my style Bible, as it's been pinned front and center to my inspiration board. Olivia Wilde was nothing short of stunning in this sleek and modern Gucci jumpsuit paired with a House of Lavande gold neck plate and strappy black sandals.

I recently visited a super stylish friend, and what do you know, she had this very image pinned to the back wall of her closet. Furthermore, she was one step ahead of me in recreating the ensemble with the top and pants already stowed away in her wardrobe. Kismet. How kind of her to help facilitate my fix.

The red sash, belonging to my Grandmother, is a familiar piece to both my wardrobe and the Queen City Style.I thought I had worn it every which way, until now. Not to be too copy-catty, but I couldn't resist styling this favorite accessory just so.

I've been drooling over the Stella & Dot Pegasus Necklace since I hosted a party a few months ago. I finally placed the order for my reward, and I could not LUV it more. Made entirely by hand, the feathers of gold are so light and airy.

Blouse: Diane von Furstenberg, similar one here, Tapered Pants: Vince, here is a pair, Necklace: Stella & Dot, Purse: Chanel, Earrings: old, but here is a pair I absolutely adore, Shoes: Mine are Calvin Klein (old), but here is a pair similar to Olivia's. I'm telling you, if you do nothing else, get these pants. They made me feel like a gazillion Ben's. Of course, I'm pretty mad over the necklace too.

Do you have a favorite look you would love to channel?

If so, I would love to help you achieve that sought after look! Please email me: thequeencitystyle@yahoo.com.

Floral Flair

Saturday was 70's and sunny; a perfect lake day in the Queen City. Sunday--low 50's, rainy and chilly. Temps have slowly regained their warm and sunny disposition, and the glorious Spring weather of the South has prevailed once again. Today I'm linking up to Marionberry Style for Marion's trend of the month challenge, florals. With my unequivocal love for color and all things bright and cheery, I couldn't be more excited to participate.

Thanks, Marion, for the hospitality! I welcome you with open arms to the Queen City anytime!

The cross walk and fountain at Phillip's Place came to mind as the perfect location for a bit of floral fun.

Shirt: Andrew Gn, mine is from Capitol, Evening Shorts: Urban Outfitters, this pair looks just the same, Belt: Vintage-my Grandmother's Shoes: Nine West Rings: Turquoise: Vintage-my Grandmother's, Custom and Tiffany's Interlocking Circles Ring Earrings: Jewelmint, last seen here, Sunglasses: Mine are Blinde Natural Borne Thriller, here is an awesome, slightly more affordable pair, Clutch: Coach (old), here is a similar one.

Street Style At Its Finest

Yesterday was mid-70's and sunny in the Queen City. Today; 50's and rainy. It is the South, after all. Not a trace of complaining, however, as the chilly temps  presented the perfect opportunity to recreate a look  I've been admiring for months, pinned to my inspiration board. I present to you my vote for best all-around Street Style, none other than the one and only Kate Moss. Wearing Boy-cuffed Prada evening shorts, a Chanel fedora and YSL boots, Kate and her ensemble are: Gorgeous.  Chic.  Effortless.  Perfection.

A Splendid Weekend

Hello my stylish friends! I hope you had a lovely Easter weekend. Here in the Queen City, the weather could not have been more gorgeous. Low 70's, sunny and a slight breeze. It's no wonder everyone wants to move to the South. God's country indeed.

I thought I would share with you a few pics from our weekend. Big Boy Hank turned four on Saturday. As if I need one more project, I added cake decorator to my resume once I started having children. This year I took on the biggest Bad Daddy of them all in decorating Hank's Lighting McQueen birthday cake.

Given I did not have the mold until 9pm the night prior to, nor did I have any but one of the icing tips for which the instructions called, I was pretty freaking scared. Not gonna lie. However, judging Hank's expression upon entering the kitchen the morning of his birthday, I think it all worked out just fine. Cake for breakfast?  Why, yes!

Happy Birthday Hank! We took it to my Dad's cabin at the Crook Family Homestead just across the border for a day of celebration. Such a glorious day!

Most wonderful man in the world and precious pea #2.

A little Gator riding.

 An Easter Egg Hunt.

Presenting Red Velvet Lightening McQueen!

Make a wish!

Boys and their toys.

Macy Girl had a blast swimming in the pond.

And today...

Hallelujah!

A Blessed Easter Weekend indeed.

I can't believe we got a picture of both boys smiling and happy. Here's hoping your day was just as glorious! On a finishing style note, I am soooo excited about my new sunnies, which you will be seeing on the Queen City Style all sunshiny season long. I borrowed this pair of Blinde Natural Born Thriller's from a friend for the recent Trunk Show post.

I loved them so much, I had to have a pair for myself. I had a hard time locating these bad boys on line, but I did manage to find ONE retailer in the Queen City, Doctors Vision Center, that carries the Blinde brand. Head on over, and get you some shade for the sun.

I look forward to seeing you again soon, through my new stylin' sunnies. For the love of a Stylish, Holy, Joyful and Fun Family Weekend, all rolled into one...

Happy top 'o the week to ya! -Whitley

Stylin' Sunday - Spring is in the Air at J. Crew

I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend! Just another calm and relaxing Sunday morning here at the Hamlin Household. Oh, my life with boys!!  I'm not totally outnumbered with sweet Macy girl.

Anywho, it has been a very busy weekend! Lots of activities, appointments, hosting duties, housekeeping and more. I am too pooped to pop. I even managed to squeeze in a quick visit to Coral over on East Blvd. for a little style session with our very own Queen City Stylist, Franklin Headen, on his birthday of all days!

Happy Birthday, Frank!!

Stay tuned to this week's Fashion Friday. You are going to love the adorable, fashion forward ensembles from Coral that Frank styled for me. I wonder who he expects to be looking lovely for tonight's Oscars?

For last week's Fashion Friday, I shared with you delicious cool hues of the rainbow from the consistently magnificent J. Crew...

If you get one shoe for summer, this needs to be the one.  Hues of nude and tan go with everything in your wardrobe, and because this one is a wedge, they make your gorgeous gams look even longer than they already are.  The shoe is well made and comfortable.  This is the shoe!

One last thing... I am learning how to code!  You may or may not know that most wonderful man in the world is my little computer genius.  For the last few weeks, he has so kindly lent his skills and talents to me for assistance in sharing with you all the fabulous fashions you see here on Stylin' Sunday. I've been watching, listening, practicing, trying SO hard to learn it, so I can do it myself. Well, I am very proud to share that today I posted all the above images myself in HTML.  I coded! I'm not sure if this is even proper terminology to explain my mean new computer skilz to you, but HOLLA!!! I hope you have a wonderful Sunday, and enjoy the Oscars!

Fashion Friday - Preppy Please, With Yellow On Top

There are two things I'll never stop loving - J.Crew and Color.  And so you can imagine how good it feels when you put the two together... Hallelujah!  Home Run!  It's Friday, I'm in Love!  I am so happy to see the first signs of Spring all around, including those in my yard.

If bright and happy clumps of yellow bring a smile to your face like they do mine, then J.Crew's Spring 2012 line will make you swoon.  I drooled over the warm pinks, oranges and reds in my EVERYBODY, everywear challenge, all a la J. Crew.

And I couldn't resist going back for more.  This time for some cools...

My ensemble?  The work of J. Crew South Park's Personal Shopper Extraordinaire, Meghan Stevens. Did you know J. Crew has personal shoppers?

Well they do, and these ladies are good.  Meghan isn't the only one.  I worked with the lovely and talented Lucia Ekberg to style the aforementioned red and pink look of love. If you are short on time or just need a little wardrobe design assistance, J. Crew's got the Gold ... and every other color in the rainbow.

For the love of fun, colorful style, Happy Weekend to all!  xo-Whitley

Fashion Friday - Vintage Blouse and some Favorite Extras

Happy Fashion Friday my most stylish friends!  The Daffodils in our yard have been pushing their way up from the earth for the last couple of weeks, and our yard has witnessed the first hint of Spring color with little yellow tips perking from their cocoons.  I'm a wee bit nervous this may just be a Spring Tease for us, though all is well... It is such a lovely sight to see!

Today's Fashion Friday is built around this shirt.

Each time I write a post focused on an item that belonged to my Grandmother or Great-Grandmother, I catch myself saying, "This is my most favorite piece!"  Aaaahh... Soo hard to pick just one!  I do love, love, love this shirt, however.  It has graced my closet for at least the last 15 years.  It is soft like butter on the skin and possesses a lovely sense of fluidity.  I love the shirred neckline...

... as well as the little tie on the waist.  It is very Halston or Bianca Jagger-esque to me.  No?

I enjoy dressing this shirt up or down.  On this particular occasion, I paired the blouse with--can you believe this?-- my very first pair EVER skinny jeans!   I mean, here I am with a style blog, almost 35 years old, and it is only now that I own a pair of these jeans.  And oh boy, have I gotten my return on investment in the last two months I've owned them.  I love boots, and I wear them all winter long.  All I can say to myself is it a crying shame I've been hiding them UNDER my pants all these years!  I picked these up at one of my favs for basics, Gap.  I had to photo document the big moment...

Paired with my Circa 2002 J. Crew Stiletto brown boots, I think the shirt spoke perfectly to my most often preferred casual-night-out Bohemian vibe.

For ear bobs, I am wearing one of my MOST favorite pairs of all time, the Fool's Gold Loop Earrings by Luv Aj.  I discovered the line via uber-chic fashion blog Who What Wear.  Can you believe that Luv Aj designer, Amanda Thomas, is only 23 years old?  Holy Talentedness.

Pretty freaking fabulous, huh?

Topping off the night's ensemble with my camel cord jacket...

It's casual, yet put together comfort, such as this that makes me want to hold onto cooler temps just a little bit longer.  You?

For the love of relaxed and easy style, here's to a wonderful weekend!  Whitley

Stylin' Sunday - Fabulous Trousers, and Happy New Year!

I hope this post finds everyone well, as rested as possible and ready for a new year.  Most wonderful man in the world and I actually made it out of the house last night like normal people--I think my first NYE out in four years--and boy was it FUN!  I am ready for 2012... It is going to be a GREAT year!

It is 9:30, and I am totally zonked.  However, this will NOT keep me from presenting you with some totally stylin' fabulous trousers like my new pair below from ASOS.

I promised I would follow Fashion Friday by bringing you Stylin' Sunday, and I am going to deliver! There were PLENTY of fabulous trousers out there to show you.  I did spend my Saturday afternoon--9 month old baby in tow--traipsing around some of Charlotte's most fabulous boutiques looking for your pants.  Would you believe I did not have a ton of luck?

Do not despair!  I did speak with the manager of super chic boutique, chezElle, located at the Shops at Morrison in South Park, and she informed me that wide leg trousers were looking quite sunny in the forecast.

chezElle expects a sampling of these fabulous pants by designers Clover Canyon, Rory Beca, Mara Hoffman and Funktional to be hitting their racks in the months to come. Yay!  Loving 2012 already that much more!

So, in the meantime, below are a slew of fabulous trousers from which you may point, click and purchase from the comforts of your very own home.  As you can see, I had a hard time narrowing down the selection. What you must understand about all of these trousers is that they are statement makers. Yes, the pattern alone on some of these trousers will turn heads, but the main thing is the shape of the trousers... so long and flowy and fabulous.

Here's my guarantee...you will be complimented on any of these pairs of trousers every time you wear them.  Go ahead.  Pick your pair, and you can report back to me.  I betcha.  Click on the link in the caption to shop the look.

Recreating Timelessness

My Grandmother, Martha Whitley, and my Great-Grandmother, Willa Lynch at Meteor Crater in Arizona, 1943 Happy Rainy Thursday from the Queen City!  Above is the picture that was the inspiration for my little photo shoot reincarnation.  It is of my Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, who I called Nana and Willa, respectively.  Growing up, the Nana I knew typically adorned herself in fashions that created a little more of a dramatic look.  She was big on glitz, sequins, scarves, shiny belts and jewels, large accessories... items that created more of a glamorous look in my mind. The always-fabulously styled Rachel Zoe reminds me a lot of Nana's look which had me totally mesmerized.

However, as stated in the Lucky article, I think she personifies a look more similar to that of Katharine Hepburn in the above photo.  I mean look at her.  Totally unintentionally cool.  I feel like she is wearing Culottes in this picture. I wonder when we will see culottes again in current fashion.  I have a pair of hers in my closet now.  I didn't wear them this summer, since I just had a baby, and they did not fit, but I have worn them summer after summer in years past.  I don't recall ever looking this cool in them.  But anyway, there's a reason they are called Culottes.  They could be called Coolottes, they are so totally relaxed-hip. I love the collared blouse and buttoned crew neck sweater.  I don't know what shoes she is wearing, but I would imagine a comfortable flat or perhaps a saddle shoe like the one in the Lucky story.  For my photo shoot reincarnation, I headed over to J. Crew at South Park Mall for some equally snazzy duds.  I love J. Crew for many reasons, but I have always relied on them for their timeless classics and staple pieces. I worked with a super cute and totally on-trend personal shopper at the store to pull together a couple of ensembles using mix and match pieces.  We threw in a fabulous necklace for a hint of bling, just for fun, which I think sort of modernizes Nana's outfit.  Check out the pieces.  The necklace is so new, that the store is not yet displaying it.  I think I kinda got the "in" on this!

J.Crew Honeycomb Cable Sweater in Pine Bough

J.Crew Flair Skirt in Heather Acorn

J.Crew Blythe Blouse in Alabaster

J.Crew Wool Cafe Capri in Camel

J.Crew School Boy Blazer in Prince of Wales wool

J.Crew Cece Stud Ballet Flat in Cognac

For this little photo shoot, I tried my best to pose just like Nana.  This was not easy.  I was laughing at myself the entire way through.  Could I possibly look any more dorky??  Nope.  But, I just kept on posin'. I was totally into the moment.  Then I realized, she wasn't posing at all.  She was just naturally this unassumingly cool.  So then I tried posing like I wasn't posing.  That really didn't work either.  But anyway, I totally love the outcome of the look created. What do you think?...

And, since this IS a photo shoot, below are a few extra shots just for fun...

Trying to be serious and poised, next to impossible!

In my breathiest Madonna voice, "What are you lookin at?" Could you not DIE for this necklace?

Great hardware and cuff detail on this super cool blazer.

For a normally heels-only girl, I think the little gold studs add the perfect amount of pop!

There's always room for a little Jazz Hands!

Thank you for reading!  And for the love of great style, here's to a totally stylin' weekend ahead!  Whitley
